DEPUR PADANA ACQUE and Pedersoli Group laundries, the perfect solution for wastewater treatment

Depur Padana Acque, headquartered in Rovigo, specializes in the design and production of purification systems for industrial wastewater, with a particular focus on the needs of industrial laundries. The company offers a comprehensive range of solutions, from traditional activated sludge systems to the most advanced technologies currently available on the market. In this article, we spotlight a specific case study: an industrial laundry operated by the Pedersoli Group in Faloppio (CO). Together with Giovanni Pio, the company's Technical and Commercial Manager, we examine the plant’s capabilities, the technologies employed, and the distinctive features of the wastewater treatment system. “We recently supplied one of our ECOBLOCK® model of wastewater purification systems to one of the laundries operated by Pedersoli Milano Group, a historic company active since the early 1960s and a national leader in linen management for the luxury hospitality sector. The system was installed at the Faloppio site in the province of Como, where the laundry specializes in processing flat linen for hotels”.

What are the features and specific characteristics of the installed system, also in terms of eco-sustainability?

“The supplied wastewater plant, which meets the company’s latest requirements in terms of water savings and environmental protection, allows for the treatment of all wastewater discharged daily by the laundry, with a total volume of approximately 60m3/ day. A significant percentage of the treated water is reused for washing linens, without the need for additional purification steps. The project is designed to double the laundry’s capacity, in anticipation of a possible future increase in the volume of the processed laundry. A second ECOBLOCK® module, identical to the first, can be installed and made fully operational in a very short time, thanks to the provisions already taken into consideration during the design phase”.

Could you please explain in detail how the wastewater purification process works?

“The purification process is conducted with high efficiency, that the treated effluent can be safely discharged into a surface watercourse. This not only ensures full compliance with current environmental regulations but, more importantly, protects the surrounding ecosystem from any adverse impact. This outstanding performance is achieved through the use of advanced technology, more specifically,a state-of-the-art Membrane Bioreactor (MBR). This system employs a biological treatment process to break down pollutants, converting them into environmentally benign substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen gas, and oxygen”.

What are the key aspects and recent developments in MBR technology?

With Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology, the resulting purified water is of exceptionally high quality – crystal clear and effectively free of pathogenic bacteria and the majority of viruses, eliminating the need for an additional disinfection step. Thanks to ultrafiltration at approximately 0,08 microns, this a“dvanced treatment makes the water perfectly suitable for reuse in various industrial processes.

A key advantage of MBR technology is its capacity to operate with a significantly higher concentration of activated sludge within the biological reactor. This capability leads to a substantial reduction (often by half or more) in the volume of space required for treatment. Moreover, challenges commonly associated with the settleability of activated sludge (which are typical limitations in conventional biological systems) are effectively resolved. The result is a treated effluent entirely free of suspended solids, eliminating the need for flocculant additives traditionally used to facilitate sludge settling.

Another important aspect is the significant improvement in both image and prestige brought by implementing advanced technologies. These innovations, characterized by lower environmental impact and superior performance (BAT – Best Available Technology), enhance the value of production activities, positioning them as standards for quality and environmental responsibility”.

What are the procedures for managing and maintaining the plant?

“From a management perspective, the plant operates fully automatically and is integrated with the client’s data network, enabling remote access via the Internet. This setup allows for continuous monitoring and control of the plant’s operations from any location, as well as prompt remote assistance by our specialized technicians when needed”.

What are the defining features of the ECOBLOCK® range of plants?

“The ECOBLOCK® MBR range offers an ideal solution for industrial laundries, thanks to its modular design that allows precise customization of size and capacity to meet each client’s specific requirements. Its compact monobloc configuration and extensive pre-assembly (almost fully completed before delivery) streamline installation and significantly reduce construction time compared to traditional systems. Operating costs are well controlled, and the system’s simplified management requires no specialized personnel for day-to-day operation. Moreover, the treated effluent consistently meets regulatory discharge standards, even under the most stringent limits”.

Is it possible to access financial incentives for the installation of these plants?

Is it possible to access financial incentives for the installation of these plants? The advanced technical features of the ECOBLOCK® plants qualify the investment for tax credits under the 4.0 tangible assets scheme, as well as incentives related to the 5.0 transition plan”. •
