One of the fastest-growing sectors when it comes to professional cleaning is undoubtedly the treatment of the garments belonging to the residents of Residential Care Homes. This is mainly due to demographic factors that are evident to all: the Italian population is steadily aging, and, as reported by the National Health Institute by 2050, the share of those over 65 will amount to 35,9% of the total population. This undeniable fact also leads to additional considerations regarding the so much needed growth of the Residential Care Homes (RCH). With such prevailing aging trend, the society will need to rely more and more on the support of such facilities, which in turn will increasingly depend on laundry services, whether in-house or outsourced, to handle the care of personal garments. Thus, professional cleaning also finds a growth opportunity in a sector that closely touches the personal sphere.
In fact, personal garments refer to everything worn in direct contact with the body in the daily life, from underwear to outerwear, as well as complementary accessories such as scarves or gloves. But mentioning all these categories, including the intermediate ones, is easy - what’s more challenging is defining the proper guidelines to process them correctly without the right expertise and efficient products. When it comes to underwear, washing it while preserving its structure and fibres is one thing, but when it comes to handling a cashmere sweater is definitely another thing. The constant evolution of raw materials and consequently of dedicated products is placing the R&D departments of companies like Christeyns at the forefront of technological development in chemical products, also considering that for washing properly nowadays also requires a strong commitment to sustainability. Thus, the products under development now or recently developed, are highly specialised and related to the fibres treatment.
For natural protein fibers such as wool, cashmere, and silk, how can we not mention the well-established Pro-Fit Wool and Selox Merino, which contain increasing levels of lanolin and dedicated surfactants to preserve integrity, shine, and softness?
“For fibers such as wool, cashmere and silk, Pro-Fit Wool and Selox Merino are recommended, as they contain lanolin and dedicated surfactants”

For other delicate artificial fibres such as viscose, rayon, and acetate, we highlight the new ISO 14024 – certified Nordic Swan lines, which include products like Select Detergent Blue and Cool Care Blue. The latter involves the extensive use of enzymes to reduce stains while also lowering wastewater values such as COD and BOD.
“For delicate artificial fibres such as viscose, rayon, and acetate it is essential to use products like Select Detergent Blue or Cool Care Blue”
For oily contaminations or greasy stains, we have developed a new class of complex degreasers, that took shape in the product Mulan Spirit (N) (ISO 14024 – Nordic Swan). This product can be used for any garment and/or fibre. In addition to being cleaned and preserved, the garments must also be sanitized and bleached under appropriate pH and bath conditions suitable for the fibres processed.
Especially when it comes to sanitization, the critical importance of ensuring it will become clear, given the highly sensitive environment prone to infection risks in which the garments, even if personal, are used.
Brand-new products like Bioxigen, based on PAP technology, and Peracid Liquid, based on peracetic technology (the latter also ISO 14024 – Nordic Swan certified), are designed and recommended for the aforementioned purposes. With their use, even the most burdensome RABC certification methods for washing cycles, extracted from EN 14698-1 annex E, are easily exceeded.
These products also allow for working at temperatures close to ambient levels, with all the resulting benefits translated in energy savings. Additionally, they work in conditions of semichemical neutrality, ensuring a unique durability of the fabrics.

Depending on the water used to wash the garments, it may be necessary to include specific sequestrating and suspendingagents to manage hardness, metals, and impurities that could affect the successful outcome of a treatment. This is due to the fact that, by depositing insoluble residues (hardness) or flakes (metals), can cause stiffening, felting, or holes in the laundry during bleaching, along with all the associated problems Complex products such as Power Extract Blue (always ISO 14024 – Nordic Swan) contain the latest generations of gluconates, phosphonates, and CMC, which, when expertly combined, achieve the highest performance and efficiency in supporting the quality of the washing cycle.
A washing cycle for clothes would not be properly completed if the nowadays microplastic-free fabric softeners, such as BisoftDuo Blue (Nordic Swan), are not added. These allow the garments to maintain a soft touch at skin contact over time, for the highest comfort. This overview is hiding years of thorough development still ongoing today.
The drive to seek increasingly modern and green technologies, even in areas like personal garment treatment, will be increasingly necessary to continue supporting the idea of a circular economy based on waste reduction and greater awareness of reuse, which is already guiding the choices made at made at EU level.
